You know SimCity, right? Yes, that's the one. In a nutshell, it's a game where you become the mayor and build a city. I have been working on commercializing research towards the realization of a real SimCity since my doctoral studies. I'm often told, "Oh, you make games, right?" While I'd like to say "Yes!", that's not quite it (laughs). The SimCity I aim to create is a real-world supply and demand matching system. Issues like population concentration, depopulation, traffic congestion, and children waiting for daycare spots are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to social problems related to supply and demand balance, which have become particularly pronounced in recent years. With technological advancements and improvements in legal systems, society is evolving daily, making more flexible lifestyles possible.
However, it cannot be said that society as a whole is keeping up with these changes. This is where the real SimCity comes in. If we could shape the future through a simulator like SimCity, we could anticipate when the balance of supply and demand might collapse and when it might improve, and thus provide feedback to the city.
That said, even in today's era of big data, many aspects of real-world events, including cities, are not yet digitized or clearly understood. Before starting SimCity, the first step is to be able to capture the city in data, and I have devoted much effort to this process so far. In the industrial world, we continue to supply services and products as real business. However, the demand composed of people's awareness and interest changes rapidly with the times, leaving uncertain information. It seems that the situation where a sufficient supply system cannot be realized in line with the times still continues. Not just mayors, but anyone responsible for city-building would not want to create an unhappy city.
Organizations that aim to enhance the total value and appeal of an area, and those that create pleasant, vibrant spaces through their own services and products, are what would be considered mayors in the real SimCity. We are committed to supporting such real-life mayors in the development of a real SimCity.
